Box Office: "Lion King" Roars Past "Moneyball"

Capitalizing on a late surge to retain its perch above the pack, "Lion King 3D" roared its way to a second straight top place finish at the box office over the weekend of September 23-25, 2011.

The Disney classic started out with $6 million on Friday while churning out an impressive $9.2 million Saturday en route to an expected $22.1 million weekend total.

Settling for runner-up on opening weekend was "Moneyball," as the Brad Pitt spearheaded sports-based picture pulled in $6.7 million in ticket sales on its first day of release with another $8.3 million the following day while closing in on an approximated $20.7 million opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated weekend totals are another family flick in "Dolphin Tale ($20.2 million), followed by Taylor Lautner's brand new film "Abduction" ($11.2 million) and Jason Statham's just-released thriller "Killer Elite" ($9.5 million).
